The Clocks Going Back: Trick or Treat for Your Sleep? 🎃

The Clocks Change This Week! Is This the Good One or the Bad One?

⏳ Read Time: 3 minutes

Welcome back! 🫡

It’s that time of year again—when we all ask: is this the good one or the bad one?

Struggle to remember which way round? Here’s the saying I was brought up with: "spring forward, ‘fall (autumn)’ back."

The clocks are going back this weekend, which means we’re gaining an extra hour.

So, is this really a treat or is there a trick hiding in the extra hour of sleep? 🤔

🛏️ Trick or Treat? The Extra Hour

In a world where sleep is becoming a luxury (the average Briton only gets 6.5 hours a night!), gaining an hour might sound like a treat.

Research even suggests that an additional hour of sleep can be a boost for our health, reducing stress responses and inflammation in the body.

Sleep deprivation affects around 500 genes, but that extra sleep can help reverse those effects.

So, while it may seem small, this extra hour could be just what you need—if you use it wisely! 🌙

🌀 The Trick: Disrupting Your Routine

But here’s the trick… While most of us are excited about that extra hour, it can still mess with our sleep routines- this is the same for our children and pets too.

If you’re someone who struggles to unwind at night, you may find yourself tossing and turning instead of catching up on rest.

Or you might wake up earlier than usual, throwing off your body’s rhythm for a few days.

🏃‍♂️ What It Means for Your Performance

Now, what does this extra hour mean for your performance?

Whether you're training for a race, hitting the gym, or staying active in your daily life, sleep is a key player.

An extra hour can improve muscle recovery, reaction time, and focus—all of which are crucial for performing your best. 🏅

But remember: the shift in routine can make you feel a bit off. If your body takes a few days to adjust, don’t panic—it’s just your internal clock resetting. Use this as a reminder to keep sleep a priority for long-term performance gains.

🕒 Making the Most of Your Extra Hour

What will you do with your extra hour this weekend?

Whether it’s catching up on sleep, getting an early workout in, reading that book you’ve been meaning to finish, or simply enjoying some "me time," make sure you use it in a way that benefits you.

It’s a rare chance to gain some extra time—so why not make it count?

💡 Takeaway

While the clocks going back might feel like a treat, it’s also a reminder to focus on sustainable sleep habits.

Make this extra hour count, but remember—good sleep requires consistency over time. Prioritise rest, and your body (and performance) will thank you!

P.S. How will you spend your extra hour this weekend? Whether you’re getting more sleep or making an early start, make sure your body has time to adjust. 😊
